Though this bird is named for its (barely) red belly, it’s most prominent feature is its bright red head. This is a medium-sized woodpecker is a frequent visitor at our feeders. It has a distinctive trilling call. They also have a long tongue and sticky saliva, which helps them get insects. They were first spotted in NH around 2000 and are primarily found in southern NH near rivers and the seacoast.
