Pileated Woodpecker

These are large prehistoric looking woodpeckers (crow-sized) with a tropical call. They take huge chunks of wood out of dead trees when digging for insects. If you see a pile of wood chips under a tree in the woods, it’s probably from a pileated. This is the woodpecker that Woody Woodpecker was cartooned after.
