At first, I thought this was a kind of hoverfly. It has similar markings and also hovers in the garden. It’s bigger than most hoverflies, and is clearly a bee upon closer inspection. This bee got it’s name from the way it scrapes hairs from leaves (such as the lamb’s ear in these photos) like textile workers carding fibers.
